Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in the arrest of a man who attempted to steal a vehicle while its driver awaited police assistance after an accident. The incident unfolded last evening when a 28-year-old woman was driving along Victoria Parade and got involved in a collision. While she left the key in the ignition and waited outside her vehicle, a man jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away, with the woman’s two daughters still in the backseat.

Upon being informed about the stolen vehicle, the Police reached out to local taxi operators who quickly spread the word via their Radio Transmitters (RT). The stolen vehicle came to a halt on Rewa Street, where the taxi operators intervened to offload the two girls. This swift action allowed police officers to catch up and apprehend the suspect, although he resisted arrest and assaulted four officers in the process. The suspect is currently in custody as the investigation continues.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, praised the taxi operators for their prompt response, highlighting their vital role in ensuring community safety. “These taxi operators assisted police in apprehending the culprit, which illustrates the importance of collaboration in combating crime,” stated ACP Driu. He announced plans for a team from Totogo Police Station to visit the taxi operators to express appreciation for their help.

This incident showcases the effectiveness of community cooperation in addressing crime and reinforces the importance of vigilance among citizens. It serves as a reminder that by working together, communities can help enhance safety and security in their neighborhoods.
