A man has been apprehended thanks to the quick actions of Suva taxi operators after he attempted to steal a vehicle while two young girls were still inside. The incident occurred when a 28-year-old woman was involved in an accident on Victoria Parade last evening and left her car unattended with the keys in the ignition.
In a hasty move, a man jumped into the driver’s seat and drove off, with the woman’s two daughters in the back seat. Fortunately, the police were alerted and contacted local taxi operators to broadcast the situation through their Radio Transmitters (RT).
The stolen vehicle was subsequently stopped on Rewa Street, where a taxi operator successfully interdicted the car, giving the police the necessary time to arrive and arrest the suspect. However, the man resisted arrest, assaulting four police officers in the process. He is currently in custody, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu praised the swift response of the taxi operators, highlighting their invaluable partnership in fighting crime. ACP Driu stated, “These taxi operators had assisted Police in apprehending the culprit, and this is an example of working together to combat such incidents.” To show appreciation, a team from the Totogo Police Station will be visiting the taxi operators to acknowledge their commendable efforts.
This incident underscores the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in enhancing public safety. It highlights that when individuals come together to support law enforcement, it can lead to positive outcomes, ensuring the safety of children and the community as a whole.
