Taxi operators in Suva were instrumental in the capture of a man who attempted to steal a vehicle with two children inside. The incident unfolded last night when a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor collision on Victoria Parade and left her keys in the ignition while waiting for police assistance. Seizing the opportunity, a man climbed into the driver’s seat and drove off with the woman’s two daughters in the back.

The police acted promptly, notifying taxi operators in the Suva area about the stolen vehicle. Utilizing their Radio Transmitters (RT), the information rapidly spread throughout the network. Later, the vehicle was spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect briefly halted to let the two girls out.

A vigilant nearby taxi operator managed to intercept the vehicle, buying crucial time for the police to respond and apprehend the suspect. Although the man resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers during the struggle, he was ultimately taken into custody, and investigative efforts are continuing.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, commended the taxi operators for their swift response. “Their cooperation played a significant role in apprehending the suspect, showcasing the effectiveness of community collaboration in crime prevention,” said ACP Driu.

To express gratitude for their quick thinking, a team from the Totogo Police Station will visit the taxi operators today. This incident not only highlights the importance of community vigilance but also showcases a successful partnership between law enforcement and local citizens in maintaining safety and order.

In an era where community bonds can significantly impact safety, this event serves as a hopeful reminder that working together can lead to positive outcomes.
