Taxi operators in Suva played a crucial role in the apprehension of a man who attempted to steal a car with two young children inside. The incident occurred last night when a 28-year-old woman was involved in a minor traffic accident on Victoria Parade. While she waited for police assistance outside her vehicle, she unwittingly left the keys in the ignition. A man took advantage of the situation, jumped in, and drove off with the woman’s two daughters in the backseat.
Quickly alerted, the police notified taxi operators in the Suva area about the theft, and the information was swiftly transmitted across their radio network. The stolen vehicle was soon spotted on Rewa Street, where the suspect stopped to let the two girls exit the car.
A vigilant taxi operator intercepted the vehicle, which bought critical time for law enforcement to respond and arrest the suspect. In a struggle, the man resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers; however, he was successfully taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, commended the taxi operators’ quick thinking and collaboration with the police. “These taxi operators assisted in apprehending the culprit, illustrating the effectiveness of community cooperation in crime prevention,” noted ACP Driu.
In recognition of their prompt action, a team from the Totogo Police Station plans to visit the taxi operators today to express gratitude for their invaluable assistance in this incident.
This story highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in ensuring public safety. Together, the police and local citizens can prevent crime and protect vulnerable individuals, such as children. It serves as a hopeful reminder that working together can lead to positive outcomes in our communities.
