A recent incident in Suva highlighted the vital role of taxi operators in community safety after they assisted the police in apprehending a suspect who attempted to steal a vehicle.

The event unfolded when a 28-year-old woman was driving along Victoria Parade and became involved in an accident. While she awaited police assistance, she made the mistake of leaving her car’s key in the ignition. Taking advantage of the situation, a man jumped into the driver’s seat and drove away with the woman’s two daughters still in the backseat.

Upon learning of the stolen vehicle, police rapidly alerted local taxi drivers, who broadcast the information via Radio Transmitters (RT). The stolen vehicle was subsequently stopped at Rewa Street when a vigilant taxi intercepted it, allowing police officers to catch up and arrest the suspect. In the process, the suspect resisted arrest and assaulted four police officers but was eventually taken into custody, and an investigation is underway.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, praised the taxi operators for their prompt and effective response, emphasizing that their actions exemplify a collaborative effort to maintain safety in the community. ACP Driu also mentioned that a team from Totogo Police Station would visit the taxi operators to recognize their invaluable support.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and cooperation in enhancing security and responding to emergencies. The collaboration between the police and local taxi operators not only led to a successful resolution but also fosters a stronger, more united community.
