Operators of Suva taxi services played a crucial role in the apprehension of a suspect who attempted to steal a vehicle while its owner waited for police after being involved in an accident. The incident occurred last evening when a 28-year-old woman left her car parked on Victoria Parade with the keys in the ignition while she attended to the accident scene.
In a daring move, a man jumped into the vehicle and drove off with the woman’s two daughters still seated in the back. Upon learning about the situation, the police quickly alerted taxi operators in the area, who widely shared the information via their Radio Transmitters (RT).
Thanks to the prompt communication among the taxi drivers, the criminals’ getaway vehicle was intercepted at Rewa Street, where the taxi driver stopped to let the girls out. This crucial moment allowed the police to catch up and arrest the suspect, who resisted arrest and assaulted four officers in the process. He is now in custody, and investigations are ongoing.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, praised the swift response of the taxi drivers for their proactive approach in aiding law enforcement. “These taxi operators assisted Police in apprehending the culprit, showcasing an excellent example of community collaboration to combat crime,” said ACP Driu. In appreciation of their efforts, a team from the Totogo Police Station is set to visit these taxi operators today to commend them for their assistance.
This incident not only highlights the importance of community involvement in public safety but also illustrates the positive impact of cooperation between citizens and law enforcement in ensuring the well-being of families. It is encouraging to see how collective vigilance can lead to a safer environment for everyone.
