Deepak Chand, a 36-year-old taxi driver, has been handed a suspended sentence by the Suva High Court after being found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm. The incident that led to the conviction occurred in August 2022 when Chand picked passengers from the Savutalele settlement. A heated argument erupted between him and one of the passengers, prompting the group to call for another taxi while they waited at the roadside.

In a dramatic turn of events, Chand retrieved a knife from his vehicle and confronted the waiting passengers. During the altercation, when one of the passengers tried to disarm him, Chand intentionally stabbed him. This violent act incited the other passengers to retaliate, leading to an assault on Chand. Although the injured passenger did not sustain severe injuries, the attack resulted in lasting cognitive impairments for Chand.

Chand received a sentence of 11 months and three weeks in prison, which has been suspended for three years. This case raises significant concerns about the safety and violence surrounding taxi services, a pressing issue reflected in recent court decisions.

In related news, the Fiji Court of Appeal recently downgraded charges from manslaughter to assault in a case stemming from the death of a taxi driver, indicating a judicial trend toward careful evidence evaluation in violent crime cases. Moreover, another notable case involved a 21-year-old being sentenced to nearly two years for robbing a taxi driver, highlighting an alarming trend of violence against drivers in the sector.

These incidents emphasize the perils faced by taxi drivers and the pressing need for enhanced safety measures. The judicial recognition of the psychological impacts resulting from such violent encounters is vital in promoting a supportive atmosphere for both drivers and passengers. It is hoped that these legal measures and discussions will pave the way for improved protections for transport service workers, thereby fostering a safer and more respectful environment within the community.
