A taxi driver convicted of raping a Dutch national has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. The 32-year-old man, who is married, appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar last Friday. Along with his prison term, the court imposed a non-parole period of seven years.
Court records indicate that the 23-year-old victim came to Fiji for a voluntary internship with an NGO. She had previously encountered the accused when he transported her from the airport to a resort. During a social outing with friends at the resort bar, they invited the driver to join them using the victim’s Snapchat account.
While walking along the beach, the victim began to feel uncomfortable with the driver. It was during this moment that he committed unconsented acts against her, ignoring her repeated pleas to stop, only halting when he noticed her friend approaching. Even as her friend tried to provide comfort, the accused attempted to discredit her account by suggesting she was intoxicated.
Justice Goundar expressed the gravity of the crime, highlighting how the victim, as a visitor away from home and family, was vulnerable. He condemned the accused for abusing the trust placed in him as a taxi driver, a role that typically signifies safety and care for passengers. The Judge underlined the profound psychological and physical impact of such crimes, emphasizing that sexual assault is a violation of not only the victim’s body but also their mind and spirit.
This case serves as a reminder of the critical importance of addressing sexual violence and the need for justice for victims. Efforts must continue to raise awareness about such issues and to work towards creating a safe environment for all, especially for individuals traveling or volunteering away from home.
Overall, the conviction sends a strong message about the consequences of such actions while reinforcing the significance of protecting vulnerable individuals in society.
