A taxi driver has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for possessing 0.133 grams of methamphetamine in Sigatoka. Atish Chand Naicker, 29, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of illicit drugs, an offense committed on July 30 of the previous year.
Court documents reveal that Naicker, a single parent, possessed a clear plastic bag containing white crystals that were later confirmed to be methamphetamine. In an attempt to avoid detection, he discarded the bag just before police apprehended him. During a police interview, Naicker confessed to purchasing the drugs from a known dealer in Cuvu, Sigatoka.
During the court proceedings, Naicker requested forgiveness and pledged not to reoffend. However, Magistrate Joseph Daurewa ruled against suspending the sentence, emphasizing the importance of sending a strong message to deter potential offenders. He pointed out that the prevalence of hard drugs like methamphetamine has been increasing in communities, necessitating a firm stance from the justice system.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about drug use and distribution, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and intervention to address drug-related issues within the community.
