A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage fraudulently. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on September 8 of the previous year, where it is claimed that the driver deceitfully acquired $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
According to police investigations, the victim encountered a Facebook post advertising car hire services and was directed to pay a deposit to secure a vehicle. After sending the money, the victim faced difficulties in reaching the taxi driver by phone, raising suspicions about the transaction. Subsequently, the victim reported the incident to the Consumer Council, which then escalated the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Fiji Police Force Headquarters in Toorak.
As of now, the accused remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear at the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This incident highlights the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online transactions, especially regarding deposits and service reservations. While the situation may seem distressing, it serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to protect themselves and others from potential scams.
