A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been arrested by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage fraudulently. The incident, which occurred on September 8 last year, involved the driver reportedly deceiving a victim into transferring $100 through M-Paisa under false pretenses.
According to police investigations, the victim stumbled upon a Facebook post advertising a car hire service. After expressing interest, the victim was instructed to pay a deposit to secure the car rental. However, after sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone, leading to suspicions about the legitimacy of the transaction.
The victim promptly reported the matter to the Consumer Council, which subsequently referred the case to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Toorak for further action. At present, the taxi driver remains in police custody and is set to appear in Nasinu Magistrate Court.
This case emphasizes the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online transactions. As more people turn to social media and digital platforms for services, awareness of potential scams is crucial. The ongoing efforts of law enforcement to address such fraudulent activities highlight a commitment to consumer protection and justice.
