A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage unlawfully. The incident reportedly occurred on September 8 of the previous year, when the accused is said to have deceitfully obtained $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
According to police investigations, the victim was browsing Facebook when they encountered a post advertising car hire services. Following the instructions provided, the victim sent a deposit to secure the rental vehicle. However, attempts to contact the driver afterward were unsuccessful, leading the victim to report the situation to the Consumer Council. The case was subsequently referred to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Fiji Police Force Headquarters in Toorak.
The accused is currently in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
It’s essential to highlight the vigilance shown by the victim in reporting the incident, reflecting a growing awareness of scams and fraudulent activities in the digital landscape. While unfortunate, such cases can also serve as a reminder for individuals to be cautious when engaging in financial transactions online. The authorities’ quick response demonstrates their commitment to tackling fraud, which is hopeful for community safety.
