A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce for obtaining financial advantage. The incident reportedly took place on September 8 of last year, when the man allegedly deceitfully collected $100 from the victim via M-Paisa.

According to police investigations, the victim saw a Facebook post offering car hire services and was instructed to pay a deposit to secure a vehicle. After sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone, prompting them to report the matter to the Consumer Council. This was subsequently referred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Toorak.

Currently, the accused is in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This situation highlights the importance of being cautious when engaging in online transactions and verifying the legitimacy of services before making any payments. As authorities continue to address such issues, it serves as a reminder for individuals to stay informed and vigilant in a rapidly digitalizing world. On a hopeful note, actions taken by police and consumer advocacy groups may help prevent similar scams in the future, fostering a safer online environment for everyone.
