A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage illegally. The charges stem from an incident on September 8 of last year, when it is claimed that the driver dishonestly acquired $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.

According to police investigations, the victim discovered a post on Facebook advertising car hire services, which prompted them to make a deposit to secure a rental vehicle. After sending the money, the victim was unable to contact the driver despite multiple attempts. The situation was subsequently reported to the Consumer Council, which then escalated the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police.

Currently, the accused remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This incident serves as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions, especially when prompted by social media advertisements. It highlights the importance of verifying the legitimacy of offers found online, ensuring a safer experience in the digital marketplace.

In a hopeful light, the actions of both the victim and the consumer protection authorities reinforce the significance of reporting fraudulent activities, which may help prevent similar situations in the future, contributing to a more secure community.
