A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly obtaining financial gain through deceit. The incident, which took place on September 8 of last year, involved the accused reportedly taking $100 from the victim via M-Paisa.
According to police investigations, the victim was browsing Facebook when they saw an advertisement for car hire. This prompted them to send a deposit to secure a vehicle. Unfortunately, after making the payment, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone for further communication.
Subsequently, the victim reported the matter to the Consumer Council, which then directed the issue to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department HQ in Toorak for further handling.
The accused is presently in police custody and is expected to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This case serves as a reminder of the importance of exercising caution when making financial transactions online. As more people engage with social media for various services, it is crucial to verify the legitimacy of offers and communicate clearly with service providers. Authorities are continuously working to uphold consumer rights and protect individuals from potential scams, which is a hopeful sign for better awareness and accountability in the digital marketplace.
