A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage through deceptive means. The incident reportedly occurred on September 8 of last year, when the accused unlawfully secured $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
According to police investigations, the victim discovered a car hire advertisement on Facebook, which prompted them to pay a deposit to reserve the vehicle. However, after sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver for confirmation or further communication.
The situation was reported to the Consumer Council, leading to a referral to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters in Toorak for further action. The accused is presently in police custody and is scheduled to appear in Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of verifying transactions, especially those made online, to protect against potential scams.
