A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly obtaining financial advantage. The charges stem from an incident on September 8 of last year, where the driver supposedly fraudulently received $100.00 from a victim via M-Paisa.

According to police investigations, the victim saw a Facebook post regarding car hire and was instructed to pay a deposit to secure a vehicle. After sending the money, the victim attempted to reach the driver by phone but was unable to make contact.

The situation was subsequently reported to the Consumer Council, which led to a referral to the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters in Toorak. The accused is currently in police custody and is expected to appear in Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This case highlights the importance of exercising caution in online transactions, especially with unfamiliar individuals or services. The police’s swift action demonstrates their commitment to tackling fraud and protecting consumers from scams.

As the judicial process unfolds, it serves as a reminder for the community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities. The hope is that such incidents will lead to increased awareness and prevention of financial scams in the future.
