A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been arrested by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly securing a financial advantage through fraudulent means. The incident, which took place on September 8th of last year, involves the driver purportedly taking $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
According to the investigation, the victim discovered a social media post advertising car hire services. Following instructions from the post, the victim sent money as a deposit to secure a rental car. However, after sending the money, the victim found it impossible to reach the driver by phone.
The victim subsequently reported the situation to the Consumer Council, prompting a referral to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Toorak.
Currently, the accused is in police custody and is expected to appear before the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance when conducting transactions online, especially through social media platforms. It’s a reminder for individuals to ensure that they verify the legitimacy of offers and be cautious of cash transactions that seem too good to be true.
