A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly committing fraud. The charges stem from an incident on September 8 of the previous year, where the accused is said to have unlawfully obtained $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.

According to police investigations, the victim was browsing Facebook when they encountered a post promoting a car hire service. The individual was instructed to transfer a deposit to secure a vehicle. After sending the money, the victim attempted to contact the driver but was unsuccessful.

The case was subsequently reported to the Consumer Council, which led to a referral to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force in Toorak. The suspect is currently in police custody and is set to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of online scams, and it serves as a reminder for individuals to exercise caution when engaging in financial transactions through social media platforms. It also underscores the importance of prompt reporting to authorities when encountering suspicious activities. Hopefully, this case will lead to increased awareness and preventive measures against such fraudulent practices, fostering a safer online environment for consumers.
