A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage through deceitful means. The incident took place on September 8 of last year, when the driver is accused of dishonestly acquiring $100 from a victim via the M-Paisa platform.
The investigation began when the victim found a car hire advertisement on Facebook, which instructed them to send a deposit to secure a rental car. After transferring the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone, prompting them to report the incident to the Consumer Council. The case was subsequently referred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force.
The accused is currently in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
In light of this situation, it serves as a reminder to the public to exercise caution when engaging in online transactions. It’s crucial for individuals to verify the legitimacy of offers, especially those found on social media, to prevent falling victim to scams. The proactive response from both the victim and the authorities highlights the importance of reporting fraudulent activity, which can help protect others from similar experiences.
