A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team on charges of obtaining financial advantage dishonestly. The incident reportedly took place on September 8 of the previous year, when the accused allegedly received $100 from a victim through the M-Paisa mobile payments platform.
Investigations by the police revealed that the victim, while browsing Facebook, encountered a post offering car hire services. The victim was instructed to pay a deposit to reserve a vehicle. After sending the funds, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone, prompting them to report the matter to the Consumer Council. This complaint was subsequently escalated to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force.
Currently, the accused remains in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This situation underscores the importance of vigilance in online transactions, as social media scams become increasingly prevalent. It serves as a reminder for individuals to verify the legitimacy of offers before transferring money, protecting themselves from potential fraud.
