A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial advantage unlawfully. According to reports, the incident occurred on September 8 of the previous year when the accused is said to have fraudulently acquired $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.

The victim had seen a post on Facebook regarding a car hire service and was instructed to pay a deposit to secure a reservation. After sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone, prompting a report to the Consumer Council. This complaint was subsequently referred to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Fiji Police Force headquarters in Toorak.

The accused is presently in police custody and is expected to appear in Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This incident highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, especially those initiated through social media. The authorities are actively working to address and combat financial scams, striving to protect citizens from such fraudulent schemes. With ongoing efforts from law enforcement, there is hope that increased awareness and preventive measures will help curb these types of crimes in the future.
