A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has faced charges from the Fiji Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce Team for allegedly obtaining financial advantage. The accusations stem from an incident on September 8 of the previous year, in which the accused reportedly received $100 from the victim via M-Paisa under dubious circumstances.
According to police investigations, the victim encountered a Facebook post concerning car rentals and was directed to pay a deposit to secure a vehicle. However, after sending the money, the victim was unable to reach the driver by phone, prompting them to report the incident first to the Consumer Council, which subsequently referred the matter to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force.
Currently, the accused remains in police custody and is set to appear in Nasinu Magistrate Court today.
This incident highlights the importance of exercising caution when engaging in online transactions, particularly in these vulnerable times when scams are prevalent. It serves as a reminder for individuals to verify the legitimacy of offers and to be cautious with financial transactions over digital platforms. Maintaining vigilance can help protect against similar fraudulent activities in the future.
