A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been apprehended by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce on charges of acquiring financial advantage through deceitful means.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 8 of last year, when the accused allegedly duped a victim out of $100 via M-Paisa. According to police investigations, the victim was browsing Facebook and encountered a post about car hire. Following instructions in the post, the victim sent a deposit to secure a rental vehicle. However, when the victim attempted to reach out to the driver for further communication, they were unable to make contact.

The situation prompted the victim to report the incident to the Consumer Council, which subsequently referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters in Toorak.

The taxi driver is currently in police custody and is set to appear in Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This unfortunate event highlights the importance of being cautious when engaging in online transactions, especially in cases involving deposits or upfront payments. Awareness and education about potential scams can help prevent similar incidents in the future and foster safer online interactions for everyone.
