A 52-year-old taxi driver from Nakasi has been charged by the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce for obtaining financial advantage. The incident allegedly occurred on September 8 of last year, when the accused fraudulently collected $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.

The victim became aware of a car hire post while browsing Facebook, which prompted them to make a deposit to secure a rental vehicle. However, after sending the payment, the victim was unable to reach the driver through phone communication.

Following this incident, the victim reported the matter to the Consumer Council, which subsequently referred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Fiji Police Force Headquarters in Toorak.

Currently, the taxi driver is in police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Nasinu Magistrate Court today.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions, especially in situations that request upfront payments. As the legal process unfolds, it serves as a reminder for consumers to conduct thorough research and due diligence before making financial commitments online.

Summary: A taxi driver in Fiji has been arrested for allegedly scamming a victim through a car rental fee on social media, emphasizing the need for caution in online financial transactions.
