Members of the Labasa Taxi Association are urging authorities and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take action against illegal taxi operators, commonly referred to as ‘Pirates,’ who use private vehicles. The association’s secretary, Sujit Sharma, expressed concerns that these illegal operators are undermining the livelihoods of legitimate taxi drivers by drawing away their income.

Mr. Sharma noted that these unauthorized cab operators tend to operate mostly at night to evade detection by the LTA and police. He highlighted the increase in visibility of pirate taxis during the ongoing Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North at Subrail Park in Labasa.

“To customers considering using these vehicles because they seem cheaper, I urge you to think again; there is no legitimate meter,” he warned. He emphasized the risks involved in traveling with these illegal drivers, indicating that it not only endangers passengers’ safety but also supports an unlawful industry.

The prevalence of pirate taxis has grown compared to previous years, coinciding with an increase in car ownership among residents. Regular taxi commuter Reshmi Wati voiced her preference for using licensed taxis to ensure her safety during her daily travels to work. “I don’t want to ride in a vehicle that could potentially endanger me, as licensed taxi drivers are held responsible for ensuring the safety of their passengers, while pirate drivers lack such obligations,” she stated.

Mr. Sharma also called upon the LTA and police to keep a close watch on drivers who may be involved in the illegal drug trade, suggesting that younger drivers might be more inclined to engage in such activities for quick financial gain.
