Members of the Labasa Taxi Association are urging authorities and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to take action against illegal taxi operators known as “Pirates,” who use private vehicles for their services. They also requested that police intensify efforts to combat the illicit drug trade.
Association secretary Sujit Sharma reported that these illegal operators have been undermining the earnings of legitimate taxi drivers. He noted that these unauthorized taxis often operate at night to evade attention from the LTA or law enforcement.
With the ongoing Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North at Subrail Park in Labasa, Sharma highlighted the increased visibility of pirate taxis. He advised customers to think twice before choosing these vehicles, as they lack legitimate fare meters. He warned that traveling in illegal taxis poses safety risks and contributes to the perpetuation of this unlawful business.
Sharma pointed out that the number of pirate taxis has grown compared to previous years, partly due to an increase in private car ownership. Daily taxi commuter Reshmi Wati expressed her preference for legally licensed taxis for her commute, emphasizing the accountability of licensed drivers to ensure passenger safety, unlike their illegal counterparts.
In addition, Sharma called for the LTA and police to monitor potential drug-related activities among drivers, indicating that younger drivers may be more likely to engage in such illicit activities for quick financial gain.
