The Tavua Co-operative for Eco-Tourism and Sustainable Agriculture convened its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Tagitagi in Tavua, where discussions focused on advancing sustainable practices in tourism and agriculture. This initiative attracted community members and local leaders eager to bring about positive change and explore innovative solutions for local development.
Vishal Goundar, the newly elected trustee, emphasized the importance of the cooperative in shaping a sustainable future for Tavua. “This co-operative is not just about eco-tourism or agriculture; it’s about creating a sustainable future for our children and preserving our natural resources,” he stated. Goundar highlighted the cooperative’s goal of fostering an inclusive environment where community members can combine their skills and knowledge to achieve shared objectives.
He also shared the co-operative’s aim to utilize Tavua’s rich natural resources and cultural heritage to initiate eco-friendly tourism projects. Furthermore, the cooperative plans to advocate for sustainable agricultural practices that enhance food security and promote environmental stewardship among local farmers.
Tomasi Nakautoga, the newly elected president of the cooperative, remarked that the initiative is expected to have a significant positive impact on the local population and Fiji’s economy. “By prioritising sustainability in tourism and agriculture, it aims to create jobs while ensuring that natural resources are preserved for future generations,” Nakautoga affirmed.
The establishment of the Tavua Co-operative is anticipated to increase community development efforts in Tavua and foster economic growth, thereby nurturing both the local ecosystem and the livelihoods of its residents.
