The Tavua Town Council has clarified that it does not hold jurisdiction over individuals displaying drunken and disorderly conduct in public spaces, as expressed by acting CEO Sireli Korovulavula. His comments followed recent media coverage addressing this concern.
Korovulavula articulated the council’s dismay over the actions of a small group that are negatively impacting the community’s image in Tavua. He emphasized that the responsibility also lies with the local business community to contribute positively toward combating this issue. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to address and resolve the problem, recognizing that intoxicating beverages, whether sourced legally or illegally, play a role in this challenge.
In support of this initiative, Korovulavula noted the commencement of a festive season joint operation by the Fiji Police Force in Tavua. He urged the community to participate in this three-month campaign, with the hopeful aim of demonstrating success in crime prevention by the conclusion of February 2025.
Additionally, discussions are underway with relevant authorities to address and improve critical town infrastructure, which can ultimately assist in fostering a safer environment.
This proactive approach reflects a community-oriented mindset, focusing on collaboration between the council, law enforcement, and local businesses. Such measures highlight the importance of collective action in creating safer public spaces while fostering a better image for Tavua.
