Tavua Town is set to embark on a series of beautification projects aimed at enhancing the community’s environment, including a dedicated leisure park for senior citizens. This announcement came from the Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, during the recent Vodafone Gold N Water Carnival held in Garvey Park, Tavua.
Minister Nalumisa highlighted that a significant portion—75 percent—of the funds raised from the carnival since its inception in 2005 had contributed to beautifying the town. Over the years, especially during the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the proceeds were also utilized to improve local healthcare by purchasing electrical appliances for Tavua Hospital.
As part of the upcoming projects, the town plans to establish shelters at taxi, carrier, and bus stands, create a new Garden Park sitting area, upgrade the children’s park, and increase the number of litter bins throughout the town. The minister expressed pride in Tavua’s previous accolades, including winning the Ministry of Local Government’s Clean/Green Town Excellence Award in both 2012 and 2014. He mentioned that this year’s carnival funds will particularly focus on the construction of the Senior Citizens’ Park, underscoring the community’s commitment to honoring its elderly population.
Furthermore, plans for improved sewage reticulation in Tavua, including nearby Tavualevu Village, are back on the agenda. Additional infrastructure improvements will see the installation of nine new parking meters at strategic locations within the town.
To support these initiatives, Minister Nalumisa acknowledged the invaluable partnership with FIJI Water, which is contributing funding towards the Senior Citizens’ Park and various beautification efforts.
This commitment not only illustrates the local government’s focus on enhancing community spaces but also signifies an ongoing effort to promote environmental sustainability and improve the quality of life for residents. The positive trajectory of these projects offers a hopeful outlook for the future of Tavua Town as it marks the 20th anniversary of its carnival this year.
