The Tavua Town Council has clarified that it does not have the authority to address issues related to public drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Acting CEO Sireli Korovulavula responded to recent media highlights about the problem, expressing concern about how the actions of a few individuals have negatively impacted the community’s reputation.
Korovulavula emphasized the importance of collaboration, urging the local business sector to play a role in addressing the issue. He pointed out that the availability of intoxicating beverages, whether legal or illegal, is a contributing factor and it is crucial for the community to unite in efforts to combat this challenge promptly.
Furthermore, the acting CEO mentioned the recent launch of a festive season operation by the Fiji Police Force in Tavua, which aims to enhance safety during the holiday period. The council fully supports this initiative and is calling on residents to engage with the police throughout this three-month campaign, with hopes of achieving positive results by the end of February 2025.
In addition to addressing public safety, Korovulavula noted ongoing discussions with relevant authorities regarding the completion of essential town infrastructure, which could support community improvement and development.
This article underscores the collaborative effort between the council and law enforcement to enhance community safety. It highlights a proactive approach to tackling social issues while emphasizing the role of citizens and businesses in creating a healthier, safer environment. By working together, the Tavua community can look forward to a more positive future.
