Tavua to get Nasivi River embankment to boost flood resilience in 2026

Families residing along the Nasivi River in Tavua can look forward to enhanced safety and resilience within their communities as significant embankment construction is set to commence in the second quarter of 2026. This initiative aims to fortify vulnerable riverbanks and shield nearby settlements from the threat of recurring floods, a promise made by Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya during a recent Town Hall meeting in Tavua, conducted by the Fijian Media Association.

In her address, Tabuya mentioned the completion of emergency clearing in the Tagitagi Creek, which occurred in mid-2025. This action was taken to mitigate localized flooding and safeguard homes from potential water damage. The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to fortifying community resilience through vital infrastructure investments designed to protect lives and livelihoods from flooding impacts and riverbank erosion.

This project reflects a broader trend in Fiji’s ongoing efforts to bolster flood management and climate resilience, echoing initiatives across the nation. The government has previously allocated approximately $17 million for community-focused drainage and maintenance projects, as disclosed by Minister Vatimi Rayalu. These initiatives encompass riverbank stabilization and coastal protection, targeting vulnerable areas to enhance resilience against climate-related risks.

The government’s proactive approach, which includes implementing flood mitigation and drainage improvements, aims not only to protect affected communities but also to foster economic stability and growth. The upcoming Nasivi River embankment project showcases a collaborative effort among local authorities and community members, uniting various stakeholders in the common goal of safeguarding their environment and homes.

Amidst ongoing challenges related to climate change, this project brings a message of hope and determination as Fiji strides toward a safer, more resilient future. Through these critical infrastructure investments, communities can anticipate a reduction in flooding risks and an overall improved quality of life.
