Acting Police Commissioner Aporosa Lutunauga has announced that Tavua has experienced the lowest crime rate in Fiji this year, with only 71 reported cases. This notable achievement is attributed to the proactive efforts of 64 active crime prevention committees operating within the district. Lutunauga noted that drug use in Tavua remains minimal, with the last significant seizure of methamphetamine dating back two years, when 4 kilograms valued at 1.3 million Fijian dollars were confiscated. This case is currently at the pre-trial stage in the Tavua District Court and remains the most significant drug incident recorded in the area.
During a recent event attended by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and several cabinet ministers, Lutunauga highlighted the success of Tavua’s crime prevention measures while acknowledging ongoing challenges posed by drug use in neighboring areas, including Nadarivatu and Ruburubu.
This development signals a positive trend in community safety efforts in Tavua, reflecting the broader commitment of Fijian law enforcement to combat crime and engage in effective crime prevention strategies. Lutunauga’s confidence and the local community’s active participation may pave the way for an even greater reduction in crime rates in the future, benefitting residents throughout the region.
The proactive stance of Tavua’s residents and the collaboration with law enforcement illustrate a collective effort towards fostering a safer environment, which serves as a hopeful model for other areas striving to maintain or improve their public safety outcomes.
