Members of the five landowning units in Tavua are filled with optimism as they embark on a transformative journey that could bring significant economic benefits to their community. Recently, representatives convened in Tavualevu Village for the formal handover of a 20-year development lease from the iTaukei Lands Trust Board. This milestone is a pivotal stride towards their ambitious vision of creating a Vatia City.

Project manager Matai Raisowalu highlighted that this initiative marks a pioneering approach, whereby landowners will have the opportunity to own both the lease and the business operating on the land. The project is envisioned as a 20-year venture aimed at fostering economic growth through integrated tourism development.

“This lease granted today represents an integrated development lease, encompassing not only tourism leases but also residential leases,” Raisowalu explained. The project is set to include approximately 81 tourism leases, each covering around 10 acres, alongside more than 1,000 residential leases.

The five landowning units involved in this endeavor are Tilivalevu, mataqali Naitokotoko, mataqali Tilavasewa, mataqali Nadawa, and mataqali Tikinasau. This collaborative effort stands to not only enhance the community’s economic stability but also to create lasting opportunities for future generations in Tavua. The excitement surrounding this project reflects a hopeful prospect for local development and community empowerment.
