The Tavua Town Council has stated that it does not have the authority to address issues related to public drunkenness and disorderly behavior. Acting CEO Sireli Korovulavula shared this clarification in response to recent media reports concerning the matter. He expressed the council’s concern, noting that such behaviors, attributed to a few individuals, ultimately tarnish the reputation of the entire community.
Mr. Korovulavula emphasized the responsibility of the local business community to actively participate in efforts to mitigate this issue. He pointed out that the availability of intoxicating beverages, whether sourced legally or illegally, necessitates a collaborative approach to eradicate the problem. He noted that the Fiji Police Force has recently initiated a festive season operation in Tavua, and the council is fully supportive of this initiative. He encouraged community members to participate in this three-month campaign, aiming for a significant reduction in crime by February 2025.
In addition to addressing public intoxication, discussions are ongoing with relevant authorities to prioritize critical infrastructure improvements in the town.
This initiative reflects a commitment to community well-being and safety, fostering a collaborative approach that can lead to positive changes in Tavua. The awareness and active participation of both the council and the police could pave the way for a safer environment for residents and visitors alike.
