Taveuni’s Green Future: Community Unites for Waste Management Revolution

The Pacific Recycling Foundation held a community consultation today at the Somosomo village hall in Taveuni. Seventy participants, comprised of government officials, representatives from the tourism sector, and local stakeholders, attended the event.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica officiated the session, which aimed to enhance Taveuni’s waste management plan scheduled for implementation in March 2025. The plan prioritizes community participation and sustainable development, as emphasized by PRF founder Amitesh Deo.

“This consultation provided a platform for the local community and various stakeholders to voice their opinions on projects that will affect their lives, ensuring their involvement in the decision-making process,” Deo stated.

The waste management plan for Taveuni features three main initiatives. Firstly, a recycling program at Holy Cross College and Primary School will teach students about proper recycling methods. Secondly, a recycling initiative for hotels and resorts will create a central hub for collecting recyclable materials from the tourism industry. Finally, a community-led cooperative, composed of local women and residents, will take charge of recycling collection, yielding both environmental benefits and economic opportunities for marginalized groups.

Mr. Deo highlighted the significance of community engagement in influencing the project. He also recognized key partners, including Tourism Fiji and the Taveuni Tourism Association, for their collaboration and support.
