The Pacific Recycling Foundation conducted a community consultation today at the village hall in Somosomo, Taveuni. Seventy participants, consisting of government officials, tourism representatives, and local stakeholders, attended the event.
Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica presided over the session, which aimed to refine Taveuni’s waste management plan scheduled for implementation in March 2025. The plan emphasizes the importance of community engagement and sustainable development, as pointed out by PRF founder Amitesh Deo.
“This consultation allowed the local community and various stakeholders to share their insights on projects that will directly impact their lives, ensuring they are genuinely part of the decision-making process,” Deo stated.
The waste management plan for Taveuni includes three primary initiatives. Firstly, a school recycling program at Holy Cross College and Primary School will educate students on proper recycling practices. Secondly, a recycling initiative tailored for hotels and resorts will establish a central collection point for managing recyclables from the tourism sector. Lastly, a community-led cooperative, comprising local women and community members, will lead the collection of recyclables, providing environmental benefits and economic opportunities for vulnerable groups.
Mr. Deo highlighted the significance of community involvement in shaping the project and acknowledged key partners, including Tourism Fiji and the Taveuni Tourism Association, for their support.
