Taveuni Water Supply Upgrades Drive Multi-Million-Dollar Investments

The government is implementing major investments to enhance water supply across Taveuni, focusing on the improvement of rural water schemes. Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, announced that the Bucalevu, Somosomo, and Muwa Schemes currently serve numerous schools, villages, hotels, and settlements in the region. However, the Muwa Scheme has been struggling with low water flow during dry periods due to diminishing spring yields.

To tackle these challenges, Tuisawau explained that the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has activated trucks and vendors to deliver water to disrupted areas and has been employing strategic valve operations to maximize water supply efficiency. He noted, “WAF has implemented several immediate measures, including water cutting and the deployment of its trucks, along with four water-cutting vendors, to provide water to affected populations. Moreover, strategic valve operations are scheduled during non-peak hours to enhance supply to elevated customers, with reverse operations executed in the mornings to balance distribution.”

In addition to immediate relief efforts, long-term solutions are in progress, including the Waka Derembua Water Supply Project valued at $2.8 million, which aims to increase water production for the Muwa and Naselesele reservoirs. Another significant project, the Delaivuna Combined Water Scheme, with a budget of $1.9 million, will benefit over 1,900 residents in Delaivuna and Karawalu, with construction slated to begin in June 2026.

These actions underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring reliable access to water for communities throughout Taveuni and demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing pressing water supply challenges. As these projects are set into motion, there is cautious optimism that they will significantly improve water reliability in the region, paving the way for a more resilient and sustainable water infrastructure for all residents.
