The Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) has announced an important new waste management model project set to launch on Taveuni, as disclosed by founder and CEO Amitesh Deo during a recent press conference in Nadi. This initiative aims to implement a sustainable approach to waste management by utilizing insights gained from past experiences.
Deo emphasized the importance of collaboration in this project, which includes partnerships with Local Government, the Ministry of Environment, and a barge operator providing free transportation services. Addressing transportation issues is seen as a crucial step in developing an effective waste management system.
A key aspect of this project is the establishment of Collection Pillars of Recycling (CPR) within Taveuni’s informal settlements, which will be overseen by cooperatives. Notably, women’s groups will take on leadership roles, highlighting the project’s dedication to empowering local communities.
This initiative is consistent with PRF’s ongoing objective to improve waste management across Fiji’s outer islands, reminiscent of prior efforts that have been recorded regarding the foundation’s initiatives. The project will include community consultations and discussions aimed at gathering local perspectives and fostering engagement. Taveuni is positioned to be a central location for these improvements, focusing on educating residents about effective recycling practices.
