A ferris wheel malfunction on Taveuni during the Wairiki Sevens tournament raised concerns, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Tournament director Iowane Gade acknowledged the incident but refrained from elaborating on the cause of the malfunction. A video circulating on social media depicted smoke emanating from the ferris wheel’s engine, prompting bystanders to help passengers disembark safely.

Mr. Gade emphasized the priority of public safety, directing the ferris wheel operator to halt operations immediately. He also mentioned that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) authorities would be conducting an inspection and dismantling the ride.

Despite the incident, Mr. Gade reassured that the ongoing rugby tournament would continue uninterrupted, encouraging spectators to attend and support the event.

Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu confirmed the incident and indicated that more details would be shared later.

This incident, while alarming, highlights the swift response and commitment to safety by event organizers and local authorities. With the tournament’s successful continuation, the community can focus on the spirited festivities it brings.
