The National Taskforce to Address Pornography has rolled out plans to enhance protective measures for minors under 17 by restricting their access to pornographic content. Additionally, the taskforce is considering imposing restrictions on certain social media platforms and dark web websites.
Co-chair of the taskforce, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications, Manoa Kamikamica, revealed the group is evaluating legislative actions implemented in Australia, seeking to strengthen the Online Service Commission Act significantly. The taskforce aims to complete its work within the next 12 months.
During a recent meeting, the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection highlighted the taskforce’s discussions on drafting proposed laws. This gathering also included a Gender Analysis of the Online Safety Act presented in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Arieta Tagivetaua, the Director of Children’s Services, provided insights on the legal consequences of creating, possessing, or distributing child pornography under the Child Care and Protection Act 2024.
In their efforts, the taskforce outlined several key action areas, which include strategies to limit children’s access to pornographic content, initiatives to reduce overall pornography consumption, and support services for survivors. Mr. Kamikamica also mentioned that additional funding would be directed toward the police to enhance combat against cybercrime and inhibit the proliferation of harmful materials.
He criticized the previous government for neglecting this significant issue, asserting that the current administration, led by The People’s Coalition, is dedicated to addressing these pressing concerns that affect the entire community.
This initiative serves as a positive step towards safer online environments for children, underlining the government’s commitment to protecting the youth and creating a more responsible digital landscape.
The taskforce’s proactive measures are aimed not only at immediate restrictions but also at long-term societal change regarding pornography consumption and its effects on children and families.
