The National Taskforce to Address Pornography held its second meeting this week, focusing on the implementation of proposed laws aimed at prohibiting children aged 17 and under from accessing pornography. This initiative highlights the increasing concern over the negative effects of pornography on young individuals.

During the meeting, the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection, alongside UNFPA chief gender advisor Dr. Leigh-Ashley, presented a Gender Analysis of the Online Safety Act. Director of Children, Arieta Tagivetaua, also shared findings regarding the creation, possession, and distribution of child pornography materials in line with the Child Care and Protection Act 2024.

Co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications Manoa Kamikamica, the session underscored the urgent need to find ways to limit minors’ exposure to pornographic content. The agenda focused on shaping actionable strategies to reduce pornography consumption and included presentations from three working groups dedicated to policy and legislation, survivor support and empowerment, and technology-based interventions.

The task force also tapped into Australia’s experiences in tackling similar issues, enriching the discourse with valuable insights. The discussions emphasized the necessity of addressing existing gaps in the legal framework, formulating new policies for efficient intervention, and establishing strong support systems for survivors of pornography-related abuse.

This gathering reaffirmed the joint commitment of all participants to safeguard children and foster a safer online environment. It is reassuring to see such proactive measures being taken, as protecting the well-being of children in an increasingly digital world is paramount for their healthy development.

Overall, this initiative stands as a hopeful step towards creating a more secure online landscape for future generations.
