Diabetes Fiji’s Executive Director, Kini Marawa, has voiced concerns over the potential increase in electricity tariffs, emphasizing the significant impact it could have on individuals living with diabetes, particularly those with Type 1 diabetes. These patients rely on a stable electricity supply to keep their insulin and other critical medical supplies at appropriate temperatures for effective use.

Marawa highlighted that for many Type 1 diabetics, the necessity of electricity is not merely a convenience but a vital requirement for survival, as insulin must be stored correctly to remain potent. Consequently, any rise in electricity costs may impose additional burdens on diabetics, many of whom are already facing economic hardships, especially those living below the poverty line.

Furthermore, he reinforced the need for authorities to recognize the essential nature of electricity for medical purposes, stressing that it is not a luxury but a necessity for the well-being of those managing diabetes. Marawa called on decision-makers to be mindful of how an increase in electricity tariffs could adversely affect the livelihoods of families already grappling with the growing cost of living.

As Diabetes Fiji continues to advocate for the rights and needs of vulnerable community members, it is crucial that those in power take these considerations into account during the consultation process surrounding the proposed tariff increase. By prioritizing the health and welfare of individuals with Type 1 diabetes, authorities can help ensure that their essential needs are met, thus contributing to a more equitable community.
