Students at Sigatoka Methodist School experienced an early Christmas gift this year, courtesy of the Tappoo family, one of Fiji’s leading corporate families. Their longstanding ties to Sigatoka and commitment to supporting local education are exemplified by their recent donation, which addressed critical water supply issues at the newly relocated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu.

Through the Tappoo Foundation, the family funded the construction of infrastructure for two large 10,000-litre water tanks, ensuring a reliable water source for students and staff amidst challenges of inconsistent supply. During the inauguration ceremony, Tappoo Group chairperson Kanti Tappoo—who himself is an alumnus of the school—shared heartfelt memories of his upbringing in Sigatoka alongside his six siblings, two of whom still maintain connections to the school, along with his grandchildren, who currently attend.

Tappoo fondly recalled his formative years filled with Sunday school lessons and hymns, crediting the late Reverend Edward Caleb for instilling values that shaped his family. The school recently transitioned from Laselase, near Sigatoka Town, to a new ten-acre property in Kulukulu, yet the struggle with water supply has been a significant hurdle since its move.

School manager Jacob Pau’u noted the establishment of two Year 12 and Year 13 classes at the new site, while additional development awaits funding. He expressed gratitude for the Tappoo family’s generous contribution, which ensures the school can meet its water needs during shortages. Kanti Tappoo also emphasized the family’s dedication to supporting their community and the schools that played a pivotal role in their legacy.

Founded in 1941 by Tappoo Kanji, the Tappoo Group celebrates each anniversary by giving back to communities and schools closely associated with the family, continuing a tradition of philanthropy that enriches local education.

This philanthropic effort not only improves the immediate circumstances for the students but also exemplifies how community support can lead to lasting positive change in education. The Tappoo family’s focus on nurturing future generations through infrastructure improvements reflects a hopeful and bright future for the students at Sigatoka Methodist School.

In summary, the Tappoo family’s dedication to local education and community welfare shines through their generous support of Sigatoka Methodist School, fostering a nurturing environment for present and future students.
