The students at Sigatoka Methodist School experienced an early Christmas celebration, made possible by the philanthropic efforts of the Tappoo family, a prominent corporate group in Fiji. The Tappoo Foundation recently addressed the school’s pressing water supply issues by installing two 10,000-liter water tanks at the newly established Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu.
During an inauguration ceremony, Kanti Tappoo, the chairperson of Tappoo Group and an alumnus of the school, reminisced about his childhood in Sigatoka, sharing fond memories of growing up with his siblings and the two generations of his family that have also attended the school. He expressed gratitude for the foundational values taught to him and his family through Sunday school, attributing much of their upbringing to figures like the late Reverend Edward Caleb.
The relocation of part of the Sigatoka Methodist School from Laselase to Kulukulu presented challenges, primarily related to water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u pointed out that even though the new campus has Year 12 and Year 13 classes, the transition has been complicated by the need for stable water resources. Thanks to the Tappoo family’s generous contribution, the water supply issue is now resolved, ensuring that the school can adequately meet the needs of its students, even in times of irregular water supply.
Mr. Tappoo emphasized the importance of the school in his family’s history, stating that it has played a crucial role in their upbringing. He noted that the family strives to support the community and the educational institutions closely tied to their legacy.
The Tappoo Group, founded by the late Tappoo Kanji in 1941, honors its legacy by giving back to communities and organizations closely linked to their family history. Each anniversary, they engage in charitable endeavors to assist beneficiaries from the villages of Laselase and Nayawa, among others, reaffirming their commitment to community welfare and educational development.
This gesture not only alleviates immediate concerns for the students and faculty but also strengthens the bonds within the community and highlights the importance of supporting educational institutions for future generations. It is a hopeful reminder of the positive impact that local enterprises can have in nurturing and sustaining their communities.
