The students of Sigatoka Methodist School experienced an early Christmas gift thanks to the generosity of the Tappoo family, one of Fiji’s prominent corporate leaders. The Tappoo Group, through its charitable arm, the Tappoo Foundation, has addressed the school’s water supply issues by constructing a support infrastructure that accommodates two 10,000-litre water tanks at the newly relocated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu.
During the inauguration ceremony held on Wednesday, Kanti Tappoo, the chairperson of the Tappoo Group and a former student of the school, reminisced about his childhood in Sigatoka, sharing fond memories of attending classes there alongside his six brothers and two sisters. Tappoo emphasized the family’s longstanding connection to the school, highlighting that even his grandchildren, Ravi and Brinda, are part of its legacy.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Tappoo spoke about the values imparted to him and his siblings by their parents and the significant influence of the late Reverend Edward Caleb, who played a crucial role in their early education in faith and values.
The recent relocation of a portion of Sigatoka Methodist School from Laselase to Kulukulu has brought challenges, especially regarding the inconsistent water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u reported that the current setup accommodates two Year 12 and two Year 13 classes, while plans for further development will depend on available funding.
Thanks to the Tappoo family’s support, the school can now rely on the newly installed water tanks to meet its needs, alleviating previous concerns regarding water supply, especially during dry spells. The Tappoo family aims to continue contributing to the school and community that shaped their lives.
The Tappoo Group, established in 1941 by Tappoo Kanji, celebrates its anniversaries by giving back to the communities linked to the family, including assistance to Sigatoka Methodist School and other local institutions.
This story illustrates the positive impact of community support and family values in nurturing the next generation, showcasing how corporate responsibility can lead to meaningful changes in education and beyond.
