Students at Sigatoka Methodist School experienced an early Christmas celebration, as the Tappoo family, prominent figures in Fiji’s business landscape, made a significant contribution to the school. The family’s longstanding connection to the school and the community of Sigatoka has flourished over the years.
Through its charitable arm, the Tappoo Foundation, the Tappoo Group recently addressed the school’s urgent need for a stable water supply by constructing infrastructure to support two 10,000-liter water tanks at the newly established Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu.
During the inauguration ceremony held at the school, Tappoo Group chairperson Kanti Tappoo, who is a proud alumnus of the institution, recounted fond memories of his upbringing in Sigatoka alongside his siblings. He took a moment to acknowledge the two generations of his family who attended the school, including his grandchildren, Ravi and Brinda, who are currently enrolled there. Tappoo reminisced about attending Sunday school and the valuable lessons imparted by church ministers, particularly the late Reverend Edward Caleb, who played a significant role in their early education.
Following a relocation to a 10-acre property in Kulukulu, the school faced challenges primarily due to irregular water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u indicated that the new site accommodates two Year 12 and two Year 13 classes, while other grades remain at the former Laselase location. Future plans for the school’s complete relocation hinge on budget availability, and Pau’u expressed gratitude for the Tappoo family’s contribution in resolving the water issues, ensuring that students have access to necessary facilities even during supply gaps.
Kanti Tappoo emphasized the family’s commitment to supporting local communities, highlighting their tradition of helping beneficiaries during the annual anniversary of the Tappoo Group, which was founded in 1941. The family’s philanthropic efforts have made a meaningful impact on various local institutions, including Sigatoka Methodist School and neighboring villages.
This collaboration not only resolves immediate concerns but also fosters a stronger community bond, showing that acts of generosity can pave the way for a brighter future for students in Sigatoka.
Overall, the Tappoo Foundation’s support represents a commitment to education and community upliftment, highlighting the positive influence of corporate responsibility in promoting the welfare of future generations.
