The students of Sigatoka Methodist School received an early Christmas gift from the prominent Tappoo family, one of Fiji’s corporate powerhouses. The Tappoo family, deeply rooted in the Sigatoka community and closely linked to the school, once again demonstrated their support by addressing the institution’s pressing water supply challenges.
Through the Tappoo Foundation, the family facilitated the construction of essential infrastructure to accommodate two 10,000-liter water tanks at the newly relocated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu, Sigatoka. At the inauguration ceremony held at the school, Kanti Tappoo, chairperson of the Tappoo Group and a former student, shared fond memories of his childhood in Sigatoka alongside his siblings. He highlighted the enduring connection his family has with the school, as multiple generations, including his grandchildren, have walked its halls.
Reflecting on the values instilled in him during his time, Mr. Tappoo credited the late Reverend Edward Caleb for imparting significant education and values to him and his peers during their Sunday school lessons. This personal history underscores the Tappoo family’s ongoing commitment to supporting their local community and education.
The recent relocation of part of the school, from Laselase to a new 10-acre site in Kulukulu purchased by the Methodist Church, brought challenges, particularly related to inconsistent water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u noted that the introduction of the water tanks has addressed a significant issue, ensuring a more reliable water source for the students and the school.
Mr. Tappoo expressed the family’s dedication to supporting the school which has played a vital role in their upbringing, emphasizing their desire to contribute to the community.
The Tappoo Group of Companies, founded in 1941, maintains a tradition of philanthropy, celebrating anniversaries by supporting various beneficiaries in the community, including key educational institutions.
In summary, this initiative not only addresses a critical need for the Sigatoka Methodist School but also strengthens the ties between the Tappoo family and their local community, showcasing how corporate responsibility can positively impact education. The partnership and commitment shown by the Tappoo family provide hope for a brighter future for the students and the community as a whole.
