The students of Sigatoka Methodist School received an unexpected early Christmas gift from the Tappoo family, prominent figures in Fiji’s corporate landscape. The family’s longstanding ties to Sigatoka and their commitment to supporting the school have only grown stronger over the years.
Through the Tappoo Foundation, the family has recently addressed a critical need for improved water supply at the newly relocated Sigatoka Methodist College in Kulukulu. This initiative included the establishment of infrastructure to accommodate two 10,000-liter water tanks, which are essential to support the school’s operations.
During a recent inauguration ceremony, Tappoo Group chairperson Kanti Tappoo, who is also a former student of the school, fondly reminisced about his childhood in Sigatoka alongside his siblings. He noted the deep connection his family holds with the school, as multiple generations, including his grandchildren, have attended it. Tappoo shared cherished memories of his time in Sunday school, where he learned hymns and values from the late Reverend Edward Caleb, whom he credited with influencing his upbringing.
The relocation of the school from Laselase to a newly acquired 10-acre site in Kulukulu came with its own challenges, particularly concerning a consistent water supply. School manager Jacob Pau’u highlighted that the arrival of the water tanks resolved ongoing water supply issues, enhancing the stability and functionality of the school for its students.
Mr. Tappoo expressed a strong desire to give back to the institution that has played a significant role in shaping the family’s values and education, stating that even in the absence of regular water supply, the tanks will ensure that the needs of the students are met.
Founded in 1941 by the late Tappoo Kanji, the Tappoo Group celebrates its anniversary by contributing to various beneficiaries, particularly focusing on communities and institutions the family is closely associated with, including Sigatoka Methodist School.
This initiative not only showcases the Tappoo family’s commitment to education in Fiji but also highlights how corporate social responsibility can significantly impact local communities. The efforts of the Tappoo family promise a brighter future for the students at Sigatoka Methodist School, paving the way for continued growth and stability in their educational journey.
