A new Tamil language education initiative, funded by the Indian government, has been introduced at Penang Sangam School in Rakiraki, Fiji. This program is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam.
Indian High Commissioner Palaniswamy Karthigeyan announced that two Tamil teachers from India will be stationed at both Penang Sangam School and Sangam Primary School in Labasa to offer Tamil classes to students and interested community members. The revival of Tamil, one of the world’s oldest classical languages, has been a long-standing request from the Fiji Indian community, particularly the descendants of the Girmitiya who migrated from Tamil Nadu in the early 20th century.
Following a visit by India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in February 2023 for the 12th World Hindi Conference, and discussions with diaspora leaders, the Indian government approved sending Tamil teachers to Fiji. This initiative marks a significant return of Tamil language instruction to Fiji after nearly 80 years of its decline.
Mr. Karthigeyan highlighted the vital role of language in preserving culture and fostering understanding among diverse communities. He encouraged Fijians to take advantage of this opportunity to learn Tamil. He also expressed gratitude for the support from the Fijian Government and Sangam leadership in launching this program, believing it will strengthen the enduring relationship between India and Fiji.
This initiative not only aims to preserve cultural heritage but also promotes community cohesion and enriches the local knowledge landscape. The revival of Tamil language classes is a positive step toward cultural preservation, benefitting future generations in Fiji.
